PATRICIA MENDÍVIL
Paty, founder of contemporary tile and architectural project TATA Mosaicos, uses earth as a medium for language in an ongoing dialogue between past and present. Her tile work made of rammed earth brings a natural spirit into the space it occupies, calling forward an energy of nature's strength in pace and simplicity.

Tata translates to abuelo, a keeper of knowledge in the community. We could say Paty works with the great tata of the earth, the soil, a sacred keeper of knowledge and history stretching back through time weaving our ancestors into the current moment with a thread of life. If we turn our ears to the land we can hear a story of our own lineage reflected back, showing us a raw narrative of our own cultural history and relationship between land and community.

Paty relocated from Mexico City to the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca to follow the lineage of the earth she uses in architectural and interior projects. Through her work with TATA she transforms this earth into a conscious art piece communicating respect back to the origin. With no piece left behind she uses excess from commissions for interactive art installations every year, inviting the community to interact with the land in a deepened dialogue of sound, touch, and creativity.

Yo creo que es una forma de voltear a ver un recurso. Un recurso que nosotros, como especia humana, no hemos tenido nada que ver en su desarrollo, estamos de invitados dentro de este recurso que es la tierra, el reconocer como especie que lo que nos da vida también puede tener una continuidad en nuestra evolución. Si hablamos de la tierra, de la tierra salen los nutrientes para los alimentos y estos alimentos dan vida, sin ellos no podríamos sobrevivir, así es cómo vamos caminamos juntos con la tierra. Esto [el trabajo de Paty] es una pieza de la tierra, el recurso, al tu integrarlo en tus espacios, vas caminando junto de ella con un símbolo de respeto y humildad.

El pasado es definido como un estado que previamente existió, algo que no existe más. ¿Tu les hablas a tus ancestros como si fuesen del pasado, o para ti aún existen en el presente?
Aún existen. Se hacen presente en lo cotidiano, con señales fisicas y emocionales. A travéz de palabras, actitudes, situaciones o experiencias con otras personas. No siempre me doy cuenta, pues depende de la atención del momento, pero existen en instantes rapidos y poderosos.

La pregunta también me hace reflexionar en TATA, la raiz de la palabra me recuerda el vínculo entre pasado y presente. El respeto por personas con una sabiduría, resultado de los años recorridos; nuestros abuelos.
Generaciones de conocimientos se pierden cuando creemos que tenemos que renunciar a nuestra conexión ancestral para vivir en un mundo tecnológico. ¿Que piensas sobre esto?

Me gusta mucho que mencionen la palabra “creemos” pues coincido con ustedes. Muchas veces creemos que tenemos que renunciar a uno o lo otro. Personalmente, he estado muchas veces en esa disyuntiva mental... paso a paso meditando es la manera en la que he ido encontrando un lugar de calma que me permite acceder a lo más sencillo e intangible que conozco; mi alma y esencia.
En el momento que la reconozco, nutro el conocimiento conmigo misma. Es ese espacio sano al que recurro cuando la conexión tecnológica al exterior empieza a alejarme de mi propia verdad.
Éxito, progreso, crecimiento, modernidad. Todos tenemos diferentes escalas para definir lo que estas significan para nosotros. En luz de recientes cambios globales algunos dicen concebir una mejor conectividad entre unos y otros, nuestra herencia, y la naturaleza. ¿A que se asemejan estas palabras, para tí?

Desde un punto de vista personal, las palabras éxito, progreso, y crecimiento están interconectadas. Dependiendo de la escala de la que nos estemos refiriendo, la connotación puede variar pero creo que la raíz es la misma. Me interesa mucho abordarlo desde la especie humana, pues desde ahi podemos contagiar nuestra herencia, y a la naturaleza.
Partiendo de ahi, veo el éxito como la capacidad que tenemos como individuos y colectivo para alcanzar nuestro máximo potencial. Progreso, para mi representa el tiempo transcurrido materializado en hábitos, pensamientos, acciones.

Crecimiento, creo que es una madurez del mismo progreso. Modernidad, la veo como una fase o etapa que se gesta como resultado del éxito, progreso y crecimiento. Lo positivo del progreso desde mi punto de vista viene en proporción a la consciencia colectiva que fuimos capaces de generar en su momento.

¿Cómo podemos generar un cambio colectivo que inspire a más conectividad con nuestros origines?
​
Lo más importante es definir tu identidad, saber quien eres, comenzar con uno mismo nunca hacer las cosas por un sueldo o por compromiso, si no por convicción. Por que de esta manera haces las cosas por que te gusta, incluso forma parte de tu formación, también tiene que ver mucho en tu entorno. Comienza con tu casa, con tu familia, compañeros, amigos, pareja, tu casa tiene que ser un símbolo.
Trabajas con materiales que son directamente cosechados por la tierra. ¿Cómo tu trabajo creativo se expresa honrando y manteniendo una conexión con la tierra?

Parte de un propósito de vida, en donde la primer necesidad surge de poner los pies en la tierra. Es decir, desde un lugar de honestidad conmigo misma. A partir de ahi se abre la puerta de la materialización. Estando ahi adentro, con mi trabajo creativo busco crear con los recursos que cuento.
​
Al incorporar la tierra, la premisa de mi trabajo es expresar una conexión con la naturaleza, respetando la dignidad con la que envejecen los materiales, adaptandome a las tonalidades, texturas propias y honrando las posibilidades finitas e infinitas que la tierra nos puede brindar.

I think it's a way to turn around and really see a resource. A resource that, as humans, we haven't been involved in its development. We are here as guests on this resource called earth, to recognize as a species that what gives us life can also have its own continuity in our evolution. If we talk about the earth, from it we get the nutrients for our food and that food gives us life. Without it we couldn't live. This is how we are walking together with the earth. This [Paty's work] is a piece of earth, a resource. So when you integrate it into your spaces, you are walking together with her with a symbol of respect and humility.

The past is defined as a state that previously existed, something that no longer exists. Do you speak of your ancestors as if they are in the past, or for you do they exist in the present?
​
They still exist. They are present in everyday life, with physical and emotional signals. Through words, attitudes, situations or experiences with other people. I don't always notice, it depends on the attention of the moment, but they exist in fast and powerful moments.
​
The question also makes me reflect on TATA, the root of the word reminds me of the link between past and present. Respect for people with wisdom, the result of the years traveled; our grandparents.

Generations of knowledge are lost when we believe we need to renunciate our ancestral connection to live in the technological world. How do you sustain this connection in your modern lifestyle?
​
I really like that you mention the words "we believe" because I agree with you. Many times we believe that we have to give up one or the other. Personally, I have been in that mental dilemma many times... step by step meditating is the way that I have found a place of calm that allows me to access the simplest and most intangible that I know; my soul and essence.
​
The moment I recognize her, I nurture awareness with myself. It is this healthy space that I turn to when the technological connection to the outside begins to distance me from my own truth.

Success, progress, growth, modernity. We all have different scales for defining what these mean to us. In light of recent global shifts that some say will bring greater connectivity to each other, to our heritage, and to nature, what do these words look like to you?
​
From a personal point of view, the words success, progress, and growth are interconnected. Depending on the scale we are referring to, the connotation may vary but I think the root is the same. I am very interested in tackling it from the perspective of the human species, from there we can spread our heritage, and nature.
​
From there, I see success as the ability we have as individuals and collectively to reach our full potentional. Progress, for me respresents the elapsed time materialized in habits, thoughts, actions. Growth, I think it is a maturity of the same progress. Modernity, I see it as a phase or stage that takes place as a result of success, progress, and growth. The positive progress from my point of view comes in proportion to the collective consciousness that we are able to generate at the time.

You work with materials directly harvested from the earth. How does your creative work speak to creating, honoring, and maintaining connections with the land?
​
From a creative point of view I think the first connection comes from putting your feet on the ground. That is, from a place of transparency and honesty with myself. From there the door of harmony opens. Being there inside, the possibility of creating and provoking emotions of peace from the hands of the earth is thanks to the fact that I adapt to the raw tonality of it, respect natural variations that may exist and accept the beauty in imperfection.

By incorporating the earth, the premise of my work is to express a connection with nature, respecting the dignity with which materials age, adapting to the tones, textures, and honoring the finite and infinite possibilities that the earth can offer us.
